in Chinese mythology, the Dragon Kings ruled the four seas and often had fearsome half-human half-dragon forms. throughout the land in shadowy groves and clandestine coves lurked fox spirits, beautiful, cunning creatures who often took the form of seductive young women. while the Dragon Kings often were frightening in appearance, their children were quite lovely and could take fully human forms.

I wanted to draw a fairy tale story with a fox spirit and a dragon prince.

This is what the school-to-prison pipeline looks like. This is how black youth criminalized.

Yesterday was the closing party for the Zombie Museum at the Monroeville Mall. My friend worked her final shift, and I spent the day with her to keep her company and have fun with the people who showed up in zombie costumes.

Two teenage girls approached the counter in the late afternoon to ask us when the events would start and what they would be. We told them a few games and a costume contest would be underway soon.

I thought they would just say thanks and walk away.

But then.

“These guys were following us before we came in here.”

“Yeah, they asked to hug us. We asked them why, and they said they were hugging all the zombies. We told them no, but they kept following us around.”

My friend and I said that was weird and not okay, and told the girls to point the guys out to us if they came back.

“We walked away from them, and one guy squeezed my butt. It was really uncomfortable.”

I was seething instantly. I looked the girl in the eye and said, “You did not deserve to have that happen to you.”

I said it twice because I didn’t know if anyone else would. It was the best I thought I could do for two young girls who possibly just had their first confrontation with sexual harassment. The girl who was groped kept laughing it off as she told us what happened. I get that. I laugh off situations that make me angry and confused.

We reminded the girls to point them out to us if they came into the museum so we could make sure the guys were thrown out. I kept my eye on the girls for the rest of the evening. They played air hockey and entered the costume contest. They seemed okay, and I hope they had a good time.

When I told my mom this story today, she said those guys were probably child molesters. I had to disagree. They were definitely predators, but probably just guys who thought they were entitled to the bodies of girls because why not? No one is going to care, right? It was just a JOKE. If you’re going to dress like that, what do you expect? You’re going to be harassed because that is the way the world works.

I care.

I expect you to respect the bodily autonomy of every person you meet.

Harassment doesn’t happen because that’s the way the world works. Harassment happens because messages of women’s subordination to men hit all of us at a very young age. We internalize those messages, and allow the abuse to happen because it seems normal.

If you know a girl who has been assaulted, tell her it wasn’t her fault. Whether you’ve known her for two minutes or all of her life, tell her it wasn’t her fault.

If you think someone brings assault upon themselves through their behavior or dress, keep repeating, “It wasn’t their fault” until you believe it.

If you think they don’t bring assault upon themselves, but still think they shouldn’t be upset when it happens because assault is to be expected, say, “It wasn’t your fault.” Keep the rest to yourself.

To absolutely everyone: I’m sorry for my complicity in the past. I’m sorry I turned away when I should have stuck around to make sure you were okay. I’m sorry I said the wrong thing (or nothing at all) when you needed my help. I’ll try to do better by you.

These photos are circulating /r/funny under “Korea’s plastic surgery mayhem is finally converging on the same face. Here are the Miss Korea 2013 contestants.” I don’t find them funny at all. This science fiction come to fruition. This is Number 12 Looks Just Like You and the Clan Conformity Pageants of Carla Speed McNeil’s Brilliant Finder series. Plastic surgery is extremely normalized in South Korea. Girls will have a procedure after they finish school as a sort of “graduation present” to themselves, bust also for the photos required for their resumes. The most common surgeries are to reproduce the ‘Western’ eyelid and the shaving of the chin to give a ‘V’ shape.

While Reddit is guffawing with “Not sure if racist…” comments, I find myself baffled on where to begin and how pervasive the problem of not beauty… but the standard of beauty has become, when women are expected to dutifully conform to a standard that is not even genetically possible for them. At what point does beauty become homogeneity? Can we teach our children that beauty not an image already set in stone, but a challenge, a lifelong scavenger hunt, to look beyond what is merely neat and symmetrical, and to search deep for meaning and purpose. Or is the genetic imperative of attraction too strong? But more so for me, and possibly of less substance overall, I am frustrated by how BORING it is. When I watch a TV show, and the cast director obviously had a ‘type’ so all the characters look like clones. Or for the unimaginative character designs in cartoons and comics, where females from 12-40 can only be discerned by their cup size, or not even… Because artists can’t be bothered to draw a female form that doesn’t get them off.

If women are objectified now, what happen when we all look the same?
